Why Saying “Yes” to Hard Things Might Save Your Life

Life throws us lots of changes that feel like a threat to our daily existence. We are not sure how to manage when things get crazy but life is just hard like that sometimes. Saying ‘yes’ to hard things might save your life, in many ways. Find out why that is and how to start saying ‘yes’ more often.

Major Life Events

Life’s major events can be assigned a grade on a scale, ranging from high to low depending on the impact. This is according to the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale. Some of the things on the list include:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Divorce
  • Illness
  • Having children
  • Moving
  • Changing jobs
  • Changing schools

The correlation between stress and health has been widely documented, but sometimes these things are all good things which cause stress. Our response can vary depending on the stressors themselves. One thing everyone relates to is that stress is uncomfortable and relief is always a great option. The shame of failure can be isolating but learning how to say yes to the right things is the key.

Say “Yes,” Sometimes

In life you always have choices to make. In fact, we make thousands of choices each and every day. If your story changed, you have a choice to make. If your story needs to change, you have a choice to make. You can stay where you are or say yes to growth, change, and finding your place. If you stay in hiding because you are ashamed, you will never get where you want to be in life. If life is inviting you for a ride towards a new destination, maybe it is time to take the ticket and go for the ride. Say yes, sometimes:

  • If you know what can happen will help you grow
  • If it will help you be in a better place in the future
  • If you are excited about the possibilities it presents
  • If you are able to work out details with loved ones who believe this is also a good choice (know who to trust when you ask)

Life will present opportunities. We can say yes or we can turn them down for status quo. If you are ready to make a change, take a leap and go for it. See where you land on the other side of ‘yes.’ You might just be pleasantly surprised.

Defining what to say yes to and what to turn down can be difficult. However, turning down the offer to get help for addiction is not an option. If you are struggling with addiction, you can turn it down but you will just stay where you are.
