Who Do I Need in My Corner in Recovery?

Who Do I Need in My Corner in Recovery?

Getting clean and sober is no easy feat, to be sure. It takes a great cast of people to help get you to a place where you feel like you are recovering from one of the darkest, most difficult periods of your life. It is more than just finding people who help you here and there, it is about people who stick with you through thick and thin, all the challenges that addiction recovery comes with. These are the people who will carry you through.

Cast of Characters

If you think of it a bit like a movie of your life, consider those who have been showing up as main characters, comic relief, and leading men and ladies who help to honor your journey by giving their best advice, time, and energy to supporting your recovery. Some of the best people to have in your corner can include:

  • Someone who played your role. If a person has worn those shoes, walked all the horrors of addiction and survived, you need them in your corner. Their stories and empathy help give you perspective and hope. Even when times are hard they can help you.
  • Extras on the set. If you don’t want to go through recovery alone, you want to find some good extras to help walk the journey. A good support group can help fill in your story with empathy, acknowledgement, and accountability needed to stay sober. They may not be best friends, but they are invaluable to your journey.
  • Supporting actors and actresses. This person has not been in your role in their life, but they support you anyways. They may not fully understand the way a person might who has been through it but they make the effort to understand anyways.
  • The honest critic. This person is not going to tear you down or make you feel bad. They critique you enough to tell it straight. They know you need to hear the truth and don’t care what you think of them. You may not listen but they give you reality checks to keep your performances on track.
  • Secret agent (wo)man. This person pushes you to try new things and grow as a person. They are like a secret agent working on your behalf, behind the scenes to keep you making the best decisions for your life in recovery. This may be a therapist or treatment provider.
  • A huge supporter and fan. This person will love you unconditionally, even if they don’t approve of everything you do. You know no matter how bad it gets, they will be there with open arms, love and support to carry you through.

No matter who you have in your corner, you need people who support your mission and vision of getting sober, staying clean, and getting clear on those life goals that got put on hold. Don’t waste time with people who don’t have your best interests at heart. Focus instead on those who will help lift you up.
