What Should I Bring to Detox?

First off, way to go on making the best decision of your life! Deciding to go to detox isn’t easy, and you may be feeling a lot of anxiety and uncertainty right now. It’s normal to feel this way, and rest assured, your feelings will change. After you get here and settled in, you won’t have to worry about anything. The most important thing, is your comfort. That being said, the following are a few things you may want to throw in your bag before coming in:

  1. Yourself – Obvious, yes. Whatever you do, don’t back out. We know it’s scary, and part of what is scaring you is your disease screaming at you to run away. That’s what addiction does; it wants to kill you and its weapon is using and drinking. It’s up to you to fight back. This is your life we’re talking about. Don’t back down.
  2. Pajamas – You’ll definitely want some comfy pj’s for sleeping and for lounging. Try to bring a couple of pairs for changing and backup.
  3. Warm Socks – You can’t go wrong with a few pairs.
  4. Clothes – Pack appropriate clothing that will last you a week, and make sure it’s weather appropriate.
  5. Hoodie – Bring along your favorite hoodie, you’ll want something warm to wrap up in.
  6. Shoes, Flip Flops, Slippers – You’ll need to wear footwear at all times, so bring what’s most comfortable.
  7. Personal Hygiene Products – Bring the necessities, so long as they don’t contain any alcohol. Beware of mouthwash, hand sanitizer, and perfume/cologne.
  8. A Small Amount of Cash – Having a little cash is nice if you need any odds or ends.
  9. A Journal, Book, Crossword – If you journal, and even if you don’t, a journal is a good tool to have in beginning your recovery. A book or crossword are also nice to have, as you will have a lot of down time.
  10. A List of Names, Numbers, and Addresses – Your cell phone will be on holiday, so bring the contact information of who you would like to be in touch with during your stay.

This list sounds a bit like a packing list for vacation. In a sense, it is. You are taking a permanent vacation from the pain of addiction, and your life is about to get a whole lot better.
