What Is Recovery?

Simply put, recovery from anything is amazing, but recovery from drugs and alcohol is downright impressive. It’s astonishing that a person could come back from addiction and lead a successful life in recovery—it truly is astonishing. The disease of addiction tears apart families, ruins careers, kills people, causes crime, and takes any shred of dignity away from those who are afflicted. From the outside looking in, no one would believe a person could bounce back from any or all of this, but it is possible, and it happens every day.

So what does recovery mean? It means a lot more than stopping drinking or using. Abstinence from drugs or alcohol is just that. Abstinence doesn’t fix what is really wrong, and when the real problem remains, the likelihood of returning to the drink or drug is high. Recovery is a process of addressing the issues that caused us to drink or use, and in doing so, we begin healing our spirit. This process of change doesn’t take place unless we are willing to do the work, and the work is a lifelong process. It’s a beautiful one, though. Not everyone makes it to recovery in time, but for those that do, it’s the greatest show on earth.

Recovery improves your health, wellness, and quality of life, and the longer you stay sober and work on yourself, the stronger your foundation will be in times of crisis. Yes, crises may happen, but so does life; recovery teaches us how to handle the good, the bad, and the ugly. These things used to baffle us, but with the help of others who have already been in our shoes, we are able to move forward, one day at a time. As we build a sober history, we are able to look back and see the hurdles we made it through sober. When you face something you don’t think you can handle, remember what you’ve already been through—you are a warrior, and recovery gives you the ability to handle anything.
