What Do You Talk To Your Sponsor About And What Do You Talk At A Meeting About?

If you have ever attended a 12-step meeting, you may already know the breadth of discussion topics that may be heard on any given day. The idea behind meetings is to share the message of recovery with one another, in hopes that we may reach the newcomer. Additionally, meetings also have a tendency to be a sounding board for each of our daily struggles and challenges in sobriety. Occasionally, the message and purpose of these groups, is lost if discussion revolves around the problem and not the solution.

This is not to say that any discussion of our problems should be avoided completely. Rather, it is important to include how you are working to solve your challenges with the tools of recovery. The problems we encounter throughout life should be discussed and worked out with your sponsor. That’s what they’re there for: to walk you through the steps, and help you on your journey, just like their sponsor did with them.

In treatment, you will likely attend any number of 12 Step meetings, and you will see some people sharing a little about what it was like, and what it’s like now. When we are new to recovery, we are searching for a solution to our problem, and we rely on others to help us find what we are looking for. When issues come up, talk to your sponsor, and when you’re in a meeting, listen to what the old-timers are saying. You may share if you choose to do so, but if you’re seeking feedback, try to chat with someone after the meeting.

As you begin to put some days together in sobriety, you will look forward to sharing the message of recovery with the newcomer. Overcoming the disease of addiction is an enormous feat, and one that we cannot do alone. It is important to give back and help others, just as we were helped.
