What are Holistic Therapies?

Holistic medicine refers to methods of healing the whole person which includes the body, mind, spirit, and emotions. The main goal of the practice of holistic medicine is to achieve proper balance in one’s life. Although holistic therapy focuses on alternative treatments, conventional medicine is often used in combination with various holistic therapies to achieve the best results. In the treatment of addiction, medical professionals may use any number of the following to ease withdrawal symptoms, and treat both acute and chronic symptoms of addiction:

  1. Acupuncture – Acupuncture involves the insertion of a thin needle into various points on the body, and is thought to help alleviate symptoms of withdrawal and cravings. It may also ease pain, decrease anxiety and stress, and help to regulate an addict or alcoholic’s sleep cycle.
  2. Mindfulness Meditation – A non-judgmental form of observation, this type of meditation is a great tool to help people new in recovery to have more control over their emotions and increase mental clarity.
  3. Massage – May help in the detoxification process by increasing circulation. May also be used as a natural alternative to pain medications such as opioids, and over the counter pain relievers.
  4. Yoga – Yoga is a complementary practice to all other traditional and holistic substance abuse therapies. It can reduce stress, increase strength and stamina, increase energy, provide pain relief, help sleep, and increase self-confidence.
  5. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) – Commonly referred to as “tapping,” this alternative therapy uses your fingertips to tap a sequence of points on your body related to acupressure points. This energy psychology technique can have a great impact on your emotions, and can balance or free up areas where your energy may be blocked. EFT may also help you cope with cravings more effectively.
  6. Biofeedback – This technique teaches an individual how to monitor their physiological processes in order to affect psychological change. Initially, you would be connected to a device that measures heart rate, muscle tension, and skin conductance. As you can see your physiological reactions, you learn how to regulate your body with your mind—a great skill to have in addiction recovery.
