The Power of Positivity

The old saying, “you are what you eat” refers to how your body responds to what you put in it. Your mind also responds to the thoughts you allow yourself to think. They say that attitude is everything, and if this is true, it stands to reason that nurturing a positive  outlook throughout your life could reap benefits you never thought possible. It’s also true that being upbeat every single day can be difficult, plus, we are only human. Fortunately, there are some ways you can help foster and incorporate more positivity into your life, and doing so will help nurture your recovery, too.

If you are what you eat and you are what you think, then it might also be true that ‘you are who you hang out with.’ If you choose friends who are negative and doing things that are the opposite of health, you are heading in the wrong direction. People who crave knowledge, strive to better themselves, and actively participate in their recovery are much less likely to cause harm in your life. We rub off on the people we spend time with, so choose your friends wisely.

Another way you can foster positivity is to create an environment that does just that. A lot of us spend an excessive amount of time in front of our phones, tablets, or laptops, so why not put a little positivity into them? Try an inspirational wallpaper with your favorite quote, or a picture of a goal you are working toward. At home, make your space comfortable, clean, and peaceful by putting away laundry, decluttering, and displaying things that mean something to you. Write positive affirmations on pieces of paper, and place them around your home in spots you use often.

People who are superstitious tend to perform better than those who aren’t. For instance, a golfer who believes she has a lucky ball may have a better round than a competitor who believes no such thing. Superstition can boost confidence and reduce anxiety and stress in people—not because it’s magical or hokey, but because it makes us feel empowered. As you bring more positivity into your life, more possibilities will follow.
