Can Setting Intentions Kickstart My Recovery?

New year, new you. At least that is what everyone thinks come January first. The start of the year is crunch time for people to get their buns in gear and hit the pavement running. What most people miss out on is the fact by February or March, people are burnt out on setting those intentions and sticking with them. Setting intentions is only one part of the process. To really kick start recovery, it means setting a plan in motion that will make sense now and in the future so you will stick with it long term and see the results you want.

Get Clear

Nobody ever gets anywhere by being fuzzy and unclear about their goals. Drawing inward and getting clarity around what you want will help you focus on what is most important. Some tips:

  • Keep it simple
  • Keep it clear
  • Make it quantifiable
  • Write it down
  • Find accountability partner

Quantifiable goals means a way to measure it. If you want to meditate everyday, write down for how long or what time of day because that will help you be specific and know if you are meeting the goal or not.

Commit to Something New

When it comes to fitness, you need to commit to trying something new each month that will help you make a difference. If it is fun and exciting, you may be more likely to try it again. If you are not going to do it regularly, there is no point. Commit to trying it with the idea you will do it regularly and give it a good push.

Take it Easy

Don’t be too hard on yourself if you fall off the wagon. Just get right back up and try again. It is so much easier to stay motivated when you relax and listen to your body from the inside out. If you have a day or two when your body tells you something about your workout plan, listen to that. If your body tells you to rest, listen to that. Self-love and kindness are about doing what is important to love and honor yourself where you are right now. Doing this is great but you have to stay committed and focused on the goal. While you don’t want to be too hard on yourself, don’t go too easy, either. Make sure to set challenging goals that will keep you coming back time after time to push past them and strive towards new heights.
