Make This Summer the Best with This Fun Checklist

Make This Summer the Best with This Fun Checklist

Making a summer checklist is a fun way to embrace the days ahead with a sense of anticipation. Especially if you are newly sober, but even if you are not new to sobriety, this can be a great time to plan ways to get around the challenges of warm weather and summer sun.

Make it the Best

When you think of summer, you might have fond memories of being a child running around carefree or finding some fun things to do in summer when you were in high school. Perhaps many of your memories are around parties and drinking when you were not sober. The goal with a fun summer checklist is to find reasons to celebrate sobriety this summer and enjoy the great weather, food, and friends without worrying about relapse. Why not give some of these fun ideas a try:

  • Drive through movie with friends (or make your own in the backyard with a giant screen)
  • Berry picking
  • S’mores and a campfire
  • Fun summer festivals that are alcohol free
  • Going to the park and renting bikes or going hiking
  • Water-based activities like paddle boarding, paddle boating, sailing, canoeing, etc
  • Go to an amusement park
  • Hit up local water parks near you with family
  • Rent a cabin and go glamping in the woods

There are many more ways to have adventures in the summer. The key goal is to focus on sober living and recovery. It helps if you have community and sober friends around to support you. The reality is that you will not be able to go places where there is no alcohol and no drugs. There may be triggers, there may be actual opportunities to do things you used to do. The biggest quest is for you to focus on having fun in the summer without worrying about what triggers you. When it happens, have an action plan you can fall back on. Even if you have to write it down to keep it in your back pocket when you head outdoors, do what you have to do to maintain sobriety.

If you focus on sober living, you are more likely to stay sober. Focus less on what you cannot have and more on what you can (and do) have which is your recovery. Nobody can take that away from you.
