How Do You Make An Aftercare Plan?

The days following treatment or detox are critical in a person’s sobriety. It is not a good or safe idea to leave without a clear-cut plan. You need to have a schedule that you can stick to, and one that leaves very little room for idle time. An aftercare or discharge plan is something you will work on with your treatment provider. Use the following tips to make a plan before you leave:

  1. Know Where a Meeting Is and Go the Day You Leave – No matter what type of program you choose to follow, get started the same day you leave treatment. You need new sober friends, and meetings are a good place to find them. Make sure you go a little early, and stick around afterwards. It might feel weird asking for and giving out phone numbers, but this step is important and completely normal.
  2. Set Appointments – Make phone calls and set appointments with your doctor, therapist, outpatient facility, sober living home, etc. Put all of your obligations into your calendar, or have it written down. Forgetfulness is common in early recovery, so it helps to make notes whenever something comes up.
  3. Self-Care Plan – Recovery is about forgiveness and learning to love yourself. Make an exercise and nutrition plan, and stick to it. Doing both of these things will help you feel better, and will aid in healing your mind and body.
  4. Know Your Triggers – Get honest with yourself and write out the people, places, and things that are hot points for your sobriety. These are things you need to change and/or avoid because protecting your sobriety is now and will always be, your number one priority.
  5. Go Holistic – There are many types of therapy that can benefit your recovery, and it doesn’t have to be only meetings and exercise. Yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, and acupuncture are a few of the more common options. Other lesser-known therapies may include emotional tapping techniques, chess therapy, wake-induced lucid dreaming, and even the up and coming virtual reality treatment. Plan your aftercare, and stick with it. These are all small things that will benefit you in a big way.
