How Can You Relentlessly Pursue a Future with a “Past?”

The future is so unpredictable. We never know what is going to happen one moment to the next. We do have the ability to reimagine the future and make changes to what we are doing in our lives today. Reimagining the future means assessing every area of life to figure out how to pursue a future when the past seems to come back and haunt the present. Follow some simple tips and tools for helping you move beyond your “past” so you can envision a better future.

Stop to Start

What can really help you move beyond a tricky past that seems to follow you around is to stop whatever you are doing that is not working. This includes:

  • Negative thinking
  • Negative behavior
  • Anything where you keep “getting in your own way”

The only way to stop what you are doing and start doing something else is to pause. Take a moment and breathe. Look around, assess what is going on and figure out whether or not this is working for you. If you keep getting in your own way, it is time to move on. Until you stop doing what is not working, you won’t be able to move forward.

Meditate

Meditation is a great way to incorporate breath work into your present reality. Even if your past is haunting you, meditation helps you stop, breathe, and listen. Everything comes back to the breath. When anxiety peaks, it is going to take your breath away and force you to breathe more rapidly. Lowering the breath and bringing in times of quiet and silence can help rid yourself of toxic thoughts and behaviors while helping you be more mindful in the present.

Get Honest

When thinking about your past, present, and future it helps to reimagine where you are now from where you’ve been. If you are in recovery from addiction or in the middle of addiction, you are probably wondering how you are going to imagine a different future. Here are a few ways to get honest with yourself:

  • Write down core beliefs and values
  • Write down your life goals
  • Write down the actions you are taking and steps towards making these goals a reality

The purpose of writing all this down is to help you notice where you are aligned right now and where things have maybe gone pear shaped. If you are not doing what aligns with your core beliefs and values, that can be one of the reasons you feel anxious and stressed about your past and future. There is hope to move beyond what feels like a difficult past but with some mindfulness and taking note of what you really want, it can help you feel more in control of the next steps to take to achieve the vision you have for your life.
