How Can I Effect Change In My Life?

Change is good, and for addicts and alcoholics, change is necessary. The two main reasons that people are able to change their lives, are because of inspiration or desperation. Inspiration comes from the desire to be different than how you are now; desperation usually occurs from a physical, mental, or emotional life event that has caused you to reevaluate yourself and where your life is heading. Addiction wreaks havoc in our lives and is the perfect catalyst for effecting change. Here are 5 ideas on how you can make some healthy changes:

  1. Learn How to Enjoy Change – Try to relax and roll with the punches. Change can be stressful, but changing your perspective on how it feels, could help you shift your attitude. Think of change as an exciting challenge rather than a negative event.
  2. Get Rid of Negativity – Negativity is like a cancer that spreads easily and infects everyone around it. People who are negative get sick, are more stressed, and have fewer opportunities than people who have a positive outlook on life. Weed out the people in your life who are bringing you down, and surround yourself with positive people.
  3. Be Grateful – Everyone has something to be grateful for, and even on your toughest days, remind yourself of how bad it could be. If you always remember your darkest days, you will never be short on gratitude.
  4. Get Moving – Exercise is important, and if you’re not doing it already, now is the time to start. The more you move, the better you will feel. Exercise reduces anxiety, stress, and helps ease depression symptoms. Plus, you will feel better, look better, and have more confidence and discipline in your daily life.
  5. Be Kind – Everyone has problems, and you will never know the extent to which someone is struggling. Be kinder than necessary. We are all human beings trying to chart the waters of life, and we all need each other. If you can help someone, do it. We get back what we put out in the world, and everyone could use a little more love.
