Give Yourself a Break

Addiction causes us to be very abusive towards ourselves. Not only are we physically destroying our bodies, but the disease eats away at every shred of self-esteem we may have had before we started drinking or using. When you make the decision to take back your life from the claws of the disease and seek treatment, be sure to go easy on yourself. We love instant gratification, but recovery isn’t instant. Getting and staying sober is a lifelong process that doesn’t happen the minute you decide to go into detox.

At times, you may feel frustrated at where your recovery is, or isn’t. If you’re having one of those days where giving your absolute best is just staying sober, that is perfectly okay. Sometimes, staying sober is all we can do, and we should be proud that we put another day under our belt. Don’t beat yourself up anymore. Negative self-talk is worthless and makes you feel worthless. You are important, you are loved, and you are a survivor. When negativity begins creeping into your thoughts, gently tell yourself it’s not true. Some of the things we tell ourselves are downright cruel; you would never say those things to a friend or a loved one, and you shouldn’t say them to yourself.

We have to be gentle on ourselves. We’ve already done a number on our minds and bodies, and we don’t need to keep up the abuse. Treatment will teach you how to take care of yourself, and how to cope with stress in a healthy way. Recovery isn’t something we can do alone. You have to first reach out and ask for help. Once you do that and come to treatment, the pieces will begin falling into place. You will never have to be alone again. The people you will meet will love you until you can love yourself.

If every night you lay your head on the pillow and you haven’t drank or used, you are doing recovery right. Don’t let anyone, including yourself, tell you any different. Take it easy on yourself, recovery isn’t a race and we are only given one day at a time. If you are ready to begin your journey in recovery, give us a call, there is no time like the present.
