Finish 2018 Strong with These 5 Tips for Goal Setting

The second half of the year feels like a good time to reevaluate goals. Some people may get anxious, worrying whether they are making mistakes that keep them from hitting goals or if they are on track. The most productive thing to do at this point is set realistic expectations for how to finish the year strong by setting goals.

Current Reality

It is difficult to move forward until you understand where you are right this moment. Sitting still and taking time along can be challenging when we want to take action and move forward before we are ready. The current reality has to focus on taking a personal audit about what is happening right now and what needs to happen to move forward. It can help to start with:

  • Write down what’s going well
  • Write down what’s not going well
  • Focus on how to make things better

Release Chokeholds

Start off by documenting all the current challenges and obstacles that may get in the way of reaching a goal. It is hard to look at any goals you might have without noticing what is holding stuff up right this moment. It can help to:

  • Identify spots where things are not moving
  • Document the challenges in a journal
  • List potential challenges down the road for this particular issue

Get a Strategy

One thing people forget about when developing goals is creating a strategy. The best way to do this is dump ideas that sprout from your head and get them out on paper. Once you get all the ideas out, assess what is there and try to find some common things you can do to start implementing change. Start with small steps that will help you reach a bigger, broader goal.

Focus on Quarters

It is harder to focus on accomplishing a goal unless it is broken down into measurable, tangible goals.  Create a chart that focuses on what you can achieve this year, then break it down into half the year, and finally into quarters. Limit yourself to a couple things that will make the biggest impact on that yearly goal.

Apply Pressure

Nothing ever gets done without a little pressure to perform. If you want to be successful in reaching your goals, you need a reason to get motivated. Perhaps it is money, accountability, or something else, but whatever gets you moving is what you need to do. THe next step is to create some stakes to ensure you take actions necessary to get there. You cannot control the outcomes but you can control the actions you take.
