Does My Character Hinder or Help Me in Sobriety?

Does My Character Hinder or Help Me in Sobriety?

Your character says a lot about you, whether or not you realize this is the case. When you think about character, it is about who you are as much as it is about how you behave and conduct yourself. If you let your character hinder you, then you are not doing much to help focus on sobriety. There are ways to know if this is true and how to turn things around to fix them.

Seeing Deficits as Strengths

When you think of what you lack as a strength, you can greatly hinder your ability to recover well from addiction. Sobriety is about acknowledging where you fall short but recognizing you need to also pump yourself up and focus on where you are also strongest. Your weaknesses do not define you.

Being Blind to Deficits

When you are blind to where you are lacking, it is hard to find a way to fix those deficits. Sometimes you need someone to point it out but often you can have a person point it out and still not be able to focus on it enough to fix it. When you look past your own problems and turn a blind eye, you are setting a dangerous precedent.

Focusing on Deficits

If you are only focused on certain character traits that are lacking, you miss the bigger picture. There might be more painful realities and difficulties you could work on but you miss them focusing on little things. It is easier to fix little things (often cause by bigger problems) than allow yourself freedom to fix and heal the larger issues.

Common Character Issues

People in recovery from addiction often struggle with the same issues. Character deficits can cause damage to relationships, health, and even though it was not the goal, your own sobriety. Some common issue sin recovery include:

  • Anger
  • Fear
  • Resentment
  • Anxiety
  • Perfectionism
  • Self-hatred
  • Negative thinking
  • Impatience
  • Loneliness

There are ways to heal character deficits. Working closely with a counselor during rehab or with a sponsor can help clarify personal deficits in character. If you learn to recognize them, how they contributed to drug or alcohol abuse, and what needs to be done to fix them you are on your way to helping yourself have a better recovery down the road.
