At first glance, one would think the ability to choose is an inherently human trait or experience. For addicts and alcoholics, choice is a privilege. The instant we make one bad decision and choose to pick up a drink or a drug, our ability to choose not to pick up another, disappears. It’s easy to take making choices for granted, until you know what it’s like to have this privilege taken away. If you work a good program of recovery, you will remember what it was like, and do everything possible to keep the ability to choose close to your heart.

Choose to hang around with people who are “on fire” for their recovery. The saying, “You are who you hang out with,” is true. People are either good for your sobriety or they aren’t. If they’re not, this is part of the change that needs to happen in early recovery in order for you to keep it. Everyone in recovery knows what it’s like to make difficult decisions for the benefit of their sobriety, and weeding out the people you once spent a lot of time with isn’t easy, but should be done. Start making friends with others who are in recovery. They know what you’ve been through, and what lies ahead. We’re here to help one another, and we’ve got to stick together.

Recovery can be a roller coaster, and if you keep doing the next right thing, you will be ok. Choosing to not drink or use—no matter what—is the cornerstone of sobriety. If you never take that first drink or drug, you can’t get drunk or high. It’s simple, but not always easy. For those of us who attend meetings, we are choosing to go so that we keep hearing the message of recovery, and so that we can continue to share it with the newcomers. Putting in the work to stay sober is an easy choice when you think about the alternative.
