Can I Still Travel In Sobriety?

For many of us, leaving the house was a feat in active addiction, and the only reason we did so was to hit the liquor store or score from our dealer. We may have had dreams of going and seeing the world, but in that state, those dreams were only fantasies. Even if we did travel while getting loaded, how much of it do we remember?

Sobriety gives us the opportunity to have experiences that addiction took away. When we’re sober, we are able to hold down a job, pay our bills, and even save a little. Traveling may be something you’ve always wanted to do, but couldn’t in the past. Now that you have your wits about you, the world is your oyster. If it’s your first time setting off, you may want to bring a sober friend along. Plus, having someone to share the experience with is always a bonus.

Almost everywhere you go, there will be alcohol, and lots of it. Just as you avoid going to bars at home, so should you everywhere else. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas does not apply here. If you have the mindset of drinking or using away from home, your beast of a disease will be woken up and your life will fall apart. It’s that simple. It’s true people at home might not know what you’re up to, but they sure will when you return. Ask yourself if it’s worth it.

Be cognizant of your surroundings when traveling. Safety and sobriety should be at the top of your list. If you do find yourself out and people are partying around you, be extremely cautious with your drink. If you’re abroad and don’t have an international cell phone plan, calling for help will be a challenge. This includes calling someone if you’re feeling uncomfortable and aren’t sure how to handle your surroundings. Listen to your gut and nurture your inner voice. If it tells you that going to the Full Moon Party might not be the best idea, listen to it.

If you’re not yet sober, but want to be, this is your chance. Give us a call, we can help you begin your own journey in sobriety. Recovery is possible, and you can experience every opportunity that sobriety has to offer. Don’t wait another day; treatment is the best decision you will ever make for yourself and for your future.
