What Holistic Remedies Help Relieve Detox Symptoms?

Most people who come to detox don’t show up in picture-perfect health. Many of us are malnourished and have vitamin and mineral deficiencies, we’re running low on GABA (a neurotransmitter that quiets the nervous system), and we’re dehydrated. Whether you are detoxing from drugs or alcohol, each type poses different detox symptoms. Some withdrawal symptoms can be deadly, which is why medical detox is the safest, and most comfortable approach to ridding the body of drugs and alcohol.

In treatment, eating nutrient-dense foods is highly encouraged, but some of us may not be able to initially consume enough of what our bodies need to correct the imbalance. Based on your lab results, supplements may be added to your diet to speed recovery. A few examples include:

  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Calcium
  • Thiamin (vitamin B1)
  • GABA (in supplement form; also found in passionflower)
  • Milk thistle

It is so important to stay hydrated. Not only does it help replenish your cells, but it aids in flushing the toxins from your body. Herbal teas can be helpful, too. Drinking ginger, lemon, and peppermint may help ease digestive discomfort, and chamomile can help calm your nerves and aid in sleep. Clear soups, broths, and saltine crackers provide calories without upsetting your digestive tract. Yogurt is also beneficial to digestion, as it helps replenish beneficial bacteria to the gut.

You may find comfort in taking warm baths or showers, and getting some exercise, even if it’s a short walk. Sleep is a major component of recovery. When we come into detox, we are physically and mentally exhausted. Insomnia is a common symptom of withdrawal, so try to rest as much as possible. If you are experiencing hot and cold flashes, try dressing in layers. At night, you may want to keep a fresh change of sheets near your bed in case of cold sweats.

You have probably already experienced any number of these withdrawal symptoms if you have tried to quit on your own, or if you’ve ever run out of drugs or alcohol. Quitting cold turkey can be fatal, and should not be attempted. Medical detox eases withdrawal, and provides you with a safe, comfortable space to taper down and ease you into recovery. Today is a great day to get sober, and we can help you get there. Don’t wait another day, give us a call and start feeling better tomorrow.
