6 Tools You Can Use to Overcome Any Challenge in Sobriety

In sobriety, life will present challenges that had formerly baffled us as to how to deal with them. In addiction, most of us had no clue on finding solutions to life’s curve balls other than using drugs and alcohol to numb, run, and hide from all our problems. The education given in treatment prepares addicts and alcoholics for the obstacles ahead.

Find and Use New Coping Strategies

Treatment helps you explore your own personal methods of how to best deal with stressors. It could be calling a trusted friend and acting out scenarios, getting outdoors to exercise and vent, or writing out a list of options.

 Avoid High-Risk Situations

The acronym, HALT references situations where you may become hungry, angry, lonely, and/or tired. If you are any or all of these, you are placing yourself in a danger zone of recovery. Any stressor that may come along when you are in this state, could pose a problem, so avoid them to your best ability.

 Be Honest

Honesty is the foundation of recovery. Practice honesty everyday, and it will come naturally. No matter what life throws your way, if you are honest life will be much easier.

 Own Your Mistakes

Check your ego at the door when you are wrong, and take action to make it right. When you are able to take ownership of your mistakes, you are able to look honestly at yourself and make improvements along the way.

 Stop Being a Victim

If you continue to have a victim mentality, you are denying yourself the power to change. Change is what it takes to make positive changes in your life, and as soon as you adopt a can-do attitude, your sobriety will be the stronger for it.

 Practice Gratitude

When you live in gratitude, your focus and perspective on the world around you tends to be more positive. Not only should we practice gratitude for the good in life, but also for our challenges. Pain is a teacher, and sometimes, the lessons we learn are blessings in disguise. These lessons can be incredible growing opportunities, strengthening our resolve and our recovery.
