Tips to “Adult” Your Way to a Productive Day in Recovery

Addiction is difficult but recovery is no cake walk. It takes motivation and a desire to make life better, day by day. Living in fear will never allow you to overcome your addiction. Facing them head on is the only way to fight back. While many of us have days when we don’t want to ‘adult,’ it is time to put those big boy and big girl pants on and get motivated to face recovery.

Get Dressed

Staying on the couch and hanging out all day may sound like a good idea, but it does nothing for your motivation to stay sober. Get up, get dressed, and prepare yourself for the day. They say it can help to have just a minimum number of shirts, pants, and shoes in the same color tones to make it easier to select an outfit each morning. As hard as it may be some days, it will at least motivate you to get up and moving. You’re more likely to get things done once you get this routine down.

Make Your Bed

You made your bed, now you get to lie in it. Each morning you also get to wake up in it and start another day. To keep yourself from staying in bed all day or lounging around, get up and make your bed right away. This simple act starts the day off on a good foot and tells your mind that you are doing something new today. Make it a habit, just like getting dressed.

List It

If you have a list and put it somewhere you can see it, the chances are higher you will try to cross things off the list. When you are feeling unmotivated or not up to adulting, a list can help you see what the day has in store. As weeks go by, you can mark off the things that you’ve accomplished, while looking back and seeing all the things that are completed. Put the list where it is visible, not just in your cellphone. Oftentimes things can get overlooked easily on the phone while it’s harder to look away when the writing is (literally) on the wall.

Set yourself up for success. Mastery of recovery means taking ownership of your life and not letting it own you. It may sound cliche, but it is true. The more you focus on taking life by the horns, the increased chances of success will come your way. The simple act of making your bed, getting dressed, and even eating the same thing for breakfast can set up a routine that will make it easier to get out the door and start the day off on the right foot.
