That Three Drink Feeling

Warm and fuzzy, confident and happy, social and secure. The drink does for alcoholics what nothing else ever has—unless you’re in recovery. That three drink feeling is something many of us chase, but most of us don’t stop there. That’s the thing with alcoholics—and drug addicts—once we start, we’re like boulders rolling downhill with no speed bumps to slow us down. We all like the effect that alcohol has on us, but whenever we start drinking, we’re like dogs chasing their tails: we never find what we’re looking for, and we take it way too far.

Addiction is a disease of more. More of everything; it doesn’t matter what it is. More alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, food, shopping—more, more, more. Whether you’re chasing that 3 or 15 drink feeling, first heroin, coke, or meth high—whatever it is you’re chasing, you will always chase it and never get what you really want unless you get clean and sober. Addiction doesn’t let us get what we want; it gets what it wants by driving us to do the things that kill us slowly. You can try all you want, but if you think you will come out on top of this disease without help, you are vastly mistaken.

This is where recovery comes in. When you stop drinking or using, it Is time to figure out why you were chasing that three drink feeling in the first place. Yes, it takes work, but isn’t it worth it to stop the absolute madness that has taken over your life? Whatever it is that has happened, you can address it and move on with your life without the bondage of addiction holding you back. There is no finish line in recovery, and no need to rush your way through it. Take it easy, and refrain from chasing (or running from) all the new feelings that come with recovery. They will be what they will be, so just try to relax, and enjoy working on yourself.
