Hope Is Not in a Bottle

Have you ever hoped that a certain feeling would disappear after a few slugs off the bottle? Then, once again, you come-to only to find that the pain you felt before is still there, and even accompanied by more problems than you already had? It is nearly impossible for an alcoholic to see any hope through the bottle, but it is not lost. Everyone around the alcoholic may still hold out hope that one day, just maybe, their loved one will get sober. For the alcoholic though, the world seems hopeless, and it is—until they catch a small glimpse of what life could be like unchained from the bottle.

This small glimpse may come in the form of another alcoholic sharing her story of what it was like, what happened, and what it is like now. Nothing comes close to giving an alcoholic hope that they, too can recover than to see another human being who has been freed from the same addiction. To someone who absolutely cannot stop drinking, the thought of living without alcohol is unimaginable. How on earth could someone go a day, a week/month/year(s) without drinking? The short answer, is recovery. Help is there for those who want it, and if someone wants it, there is hope.

Ask anyone in recovery what it feels like to not be chained to the bottle, and freedom is likely to be their response. Freedom from addiction is hope, plain and simple. Without the bondage of addiction, anything is possible. Your health can improve, you can go back to school, travel, develop loving relationships, find a lasting career, have a family—anything is possible in recovery. Addiction can be stopped in its tracks with a phone call. Alcoholics may not realize this, but people want to help. People who have been in the depths of addiction want to help give others hope that they can recover, too. For families of alcoholics, never give up hope that your loved one can recover. It happens every day, and it could happen for you.
