Growth Mindset

Human beings are creatures of habit. From routine to ice cream preference, it can be difficult to divert from what is known and what is comfortable. Even if something isn’t good for us, we may be stuck in the trap of staying because it has the illusion of safety. Our thoughts can also become stuck in a loop of repetitive thinking. For instance, if you believe that you will always be in your dead-end job because that is the best you can do, you are stuck. If a child is told that she will never amount to much, and there is no sense in even trying to pursue her dreams, she is starting out with the cards stacked against her. When we start believing only what is right in front of us, and accepting where we are as the final destination, we become stagnant.

In addiction, if we believe that this is all there is, how much hope is there to recover? A growth mindset is the opposite of accepting that there is nothing more to life. It is believing that you can change, and that who you are now, is not necessarily the person you have to be—or will be in 1, 5, or 10 years. A fixed mindset is one that stays stuck, and derails a person from change. If you are an addict or alcoholic, a fixed way of thinking will keep you sick. No matter who you are, if you become open to the possibility of change, your life can transform.

With an open mind, you are more likely to meet more people, experience new things, and come upon new opportunities. A fixed mindset puts up a wall to anything new, and the disease of addiction feeds right into that. The disease tells you that you can’t change, it prevents you from getting help, and it blocks the hope of having a different life. There are ways around it, and sometimes, it can be as simple as one alcoholic listening to another who has found recovery. Always keep an open mind, because when you do, your possibilities are endless.
