Gossip or Concern?

Human beings are a social lot, and sometimes, our socialization can turn into a discussion of others. There aren’t many people who have never gossiped about someone else. It begins from an early age, and sticks with us into adulthood. Even though recovery is about becoming better human beings, we are not immune from running our mouths behind others backs.

Whether it’s gossip at work, amongst friends, from church, or your hiking group, it happens all the time. Recovery programs such as any 12 Step group, are no different in terms of circulating the gossip. There is a difference though, in the harm it can inflict. Addicts and alcoholics are a sensitive bunch, with a deadly disease. Talk that may seem harmless could quite possibly cause one of us to go off the deep and drink or use over a rumor—whether it’s true or not.

Ask yourself this, “If what is being said is real concern for someone, why is it not being put directly to the person it concerns?” Talk that is secretive can be hurtful, no matter what spin is put on it. If you are worried about someone, or their behavior is a little concerning, call them on it. Avoid igniting rumors; by calling someone on a red flag, you may just save their life. If you start the rumor mill instead, it may have the opposite effect.

As addicts and alcoholics in recovery, we need to support one another. This disease wants to kill us, and we must do whatever we can to help each other out. If you are worried about a loved one, talk to her about it. If it is you who is struggling, we can help you. This battle cannot be fought alone.
