Get More Productive with These Internet Restriction Apps

Maybe someone mentioned it to you offhandedly one time about being more productive and spending less time online. Perhaps a loved one said you spend too much time on the phone or computer and need a detox. It may be that you decided for yourself that you needed to put the phone down and be more productive on your goals. These internet restriction apps are the new way to build accountability into your day so you can just get stuff done.

Dangers of Addiction

Internet addiction rates are skyrocketing for all age groups, teens on up. Restricting screens around kids is so important in the early years, with research showing how kids copy interactions with technology that model parental behavior. Smartphones and tablets are the wave of the future but they are also wreaking havoc with our lives, causing addictive phone checking, scrolling, liking, and in the process, disconnecting us from our loved ones and our real life goals.

Accountability Appst

The following apps were designed with people in mind who just cannot put down their phones. If you are one of those people, check these out:

Freedom: a comprehensive Internet, website, and app blocker that allows you to block access to time wasters across your devices. There is a monthly, yearly, or permanent ownership fee, depending on what you desire.

SelfControl: a free Mac app that blocks access to websites you choose for a time period you set. If you want to check Facebook while working, with kids, or just wanted free time, SelfControl will not allow you to visit, even if you uninstall the app.

Cold Turkey: similar mission to SelfControl, with lots of customizable features. This includes website blocking and restricting access to just a few websites. There is a pro version for a fee but the website blocking feature is free.

StayFocucsed:  a Google Chrome extension that works opposite of SelfControl and Cold Turkey. Instead of assigning yourself a time period, you are allowed to assign yourself time per day to view websites, then they lock up.

Time Sink: this app will monitor a Mac for time spent on each window, app, or program and provide a report on how your time was spent. A great tool for analyzing any challenge spots.

Work and personal life can be intertwined with the internet and social media so it is not always possible to be off the grid, as they say. However, it is manageable to stay off websites that suck up your time and focus solely on what matters: spending time with loved ones and being more productive at work and home. Self control goes a long way.
