Building a Sober History

In active addiction, we built a history chock full of negative behaviors that were driven by the disease of addiction. The patterns to which we became accustomed and the responses we developed to the outside world all centered on drinking or using. When we come to recovery, much of the learning process involves changing our old patterns of behavior, and developing new, healthy ones to protect our sobriety.

The acts of getting and staying sober aren’t easy. If they were, the amount of addicts and alcoholics who have lost their lives to this disease wouldn’t be such an atrocious number, or even an issue. Learning to live without drugs and alcoholic is a lifelong process, that we do one day at a time. The longer you stay sober, the more you replace your old behavior with the new. After time goes by, you are able to slowly build a sober history that you can be proud of, and continue to look forward to building more.

A sober history allows us to look back on the trials and tribulations that we’ve faced in our sobriety. When we come upon a challenge or difficulty, we can recall other difficult times that we were able to get through without picking up a drink or a drug. When you can look back and tell yourself, “Well, if I was able to power through that, I can get through this, too,” you are empowering yourself and summoning your strength to deal with life’s challenges on life’s terms. This is a big change for any of us who used to deal with life’s challenges on our own terms, which used to entail numbing out through addiction.

If you are struggling with addiction, you are not alone. You don’t have to feel this way ever again, and we can help you begin to build your own sober history.
